PARIS HAUTE COUTOURE SS13

Valentino
The Paris haute coutoure fashion week has come to an end and because I didn't want to get us all catwalk-tired before the regular fashion weeks have started I made a quick top 10 of the most impressive looks. The haute coutoure shows aren't usually given a whole lot of attention compared to the media madness we'll see in a few weeks as fashion month starts again, but I always love taking a moment to look at the fine pieces of art that are produced in the great fashion houses and dream about the lives of the people who might end up wearing them. Also, I believe we have to do justice to the people who spent an enormous amount of time sowing the items together. At the Valentino show visitors found notes on their seats stating that one particular outfit had taken 500 hours of hand-rolling to create the piping of the skirt. Apparently, one of the rollers even developed carpal tunnel syndrom during the production of the collection. Madness! The things one does for the sake of fashion.

The collection did turn out to be exceptionally pretty. In fact, my top 10 consists of looks from only two of the shows, and Valentino was one of them. I also loved the shows at Giambattista Valli, Christian Dior and Chanel, but when I added some of their looks to this list it just didn't seem right. They just didn't have that same level of fairytale-ishness. Or maybe I'm just a bit oldfashioned. My favorite show was Elie Saab, handsdown. Just like Valentino, they created a series of breathtaking gowns with the most extraordinary detailing. The very last look might not be very 'pretty' per se, but definitely belonged in the top 10 of most impressive looks, even if it was just for its volume. For me, it was the pattern of the lace and the gorgeous veil that kept my eyes glued to the screen.

"Coutoure has to be magical", said Pierpaolo Piccioli, co-designer of the Valentino show, and that is exactly what these two shows were. Absolutely magical.
